Where to Buy Ethanol (95–99%) for Metal Complex Guitar Dye
Our Metal Complex dye powders are mixed with high-strength ethanol. The less water in the alcohol, the better the powder dissolves and the less the wood grain rises. Aim for 95 to 99% ethanol and avoid 70% rubbing alcohol.
What to look for on the label
- Ethanol content of 90% or more, ideally 95 to 99%.
- Clear and colourless. A coloured alcohol tints your dye mix, which shows on light colours.
- No added fragrance, oil or gel. Liquid only.
- As little methanol as possible: it works, but it is more toxic to breathe.
Which products work
- Denatured alcohol: the standard solvent for alcohol dyes and shellac. Check the safety data sheet and choose one that is mostly ethanol.
- Bioethanol fuel for fireplaces and burners: usually around 96% ethanol and clear. Take the liquid, not the gel.
- High-proof grain alcohol (190 proof, 95%), where it is legal and sold, is the cleanest option but the most expensive.
Where to buy it in the US
- In store: home improvement and hardware stores such as Home Depot, Lowe's and Ace Hardware sell denatured alcohol in the paint and solvents aisle. Walmart usually stocks it too.
- Online: the same retailers' websites, woodworking and finishing suppliers, and the large online marketplaces.
Buying outside the US? The UK, French, German, Spanish and Italian versions of this page list the usual shops in each country.
Safety
- Ethanol is highly flammable: no flames, sparks or smoking nearby.
- Work in a well ventilated room and wear gloves. When spraying, wear a mask rated for organic vapours.
- Close the bottle after use and store it away from heat and out of reach of children.
