Building a guitar - Tremolo Bridge

How to Install a Tremolo Bridge: Installation & Setup Guide

Known for its ability to create dramatic pitch variations, the tremolo bridge adds a new layer of expression to your playing. In this comprehensive guide, we'll focus on its installation on the guitar body including bridge alignment and spring installation.

The Vintage 6-Screw Style tremolo is a classic synchronized tremolo with six screws anchoring the bridge, offering smooth vibrato with moderate tuning stability.

Installing the springs: The stability of a vintage 6-screw tremolo relies on its spring system. Attach the springs in the tremolo cavity, ensuring even tension distribution to balance the bridge and maintain tuning stability during bends and vibrato use.

String Installation: Install the strings through the bridge block, tune them to pitch, and stretch them thoroughly to minimize tuning instability caused by the tremolo movement.

Balance Your Tremolo: Achieve balance between the tremolo springs and string tension to make the system float correctly. Follow these steps:

  • Use Post-It Notes to set the trem height as needed (cf. picture below).

  • Aim for equal tension between the strings and trem springs.
  • Use fresh, fully stretched strings for reliability.

As you string, the tremolo may lift up; adjust the back claw to counteract string tension.

Initial Tremolo Adjustment & Set up: In order to make sure that your intonation is always accurate when using the tremolo bar we advise to follow this specific set-up below.

  • Adjust Intonation: Adjust the guitar's intonation for each string by comparing the 12th fret harmonic with the fretted note. Use your guitar tuner for accuracy. Make adjustments by moving the bridge saddles.
  • Lubricate: Clean the tremolo system and lubricate moving parts with sewing machine oil or a product like Nut Sauce. Address any issues with strings getting caught in the nut or string trees.

Locking Trem Systems (Floyd Rose, Ibanez Edge): For locking tremolo systems, lock the nut down to finish the setup. Ensure the tension bar above the locking nut is properly adjusted to maintain string tension. Use the spring tension in the rear trem cavity to fine-tune overall tuning if necessary.

Conclusion

Achieving precise pitch stability and smooth tremolo action with a vintage 6-screw tremolo requires careful attention to bridge alignment and setup. Ensuring the bridge is properly seated against the body and centered with the neck is crucial for accurate pitch modulation across all strings. Equally important is balancing the tremolo springs in the cavity to maintain consistent string tension during bends and vibrato use.

When setting up this type of tremolo, follow a structured approach: install fresh strings, adjust intonation, lubricate pivot points, and fine-tune the spring tension to achieve the desired level of floating or a flush-mounted position. Unlike locking tremolo systems, this design relies on proper nut and saddle adjustments to maintain tuning stability.

Finally, grounding the electronics to the spring claw helps minimize unwanted noise and interference, ensuring a clear and dynamic tone.
